Are we devolving?

This is an interesting question, and one we should consider quite seriously, especially when it comes to our health. In order to answer it accurately we need to have a look at our estimated evolutionary timeline.

  • Life as we know it started around 7 million years ago, we were given the name Homo genus.
  • Around 2.5 million years ago we split from our ape cousins and were given the name Homo erectus.
  • Around 160,000 years ago we appeared in East Africa and were given the name Homo sapien. (this is pretty much who we are today….)
  • Around 60,000 years ago a small group of us decided to migrate.
  • Around 45,000 years ago we found what is now known as Europe and settled there.
  • Around 30,000 years ago there was a population boom.
  • Around 20,000 years ago we decided to explore and found North America.
  • Around 12,500 years ago we had populated pretty much most of the planet.
  • Around 10,000 years ago we began to become ‘civilized’ and began cultivating crops and farming in the Middle East. (this is where it all started to slow down)
  • Around 4,500 years ago the same happened in North & South America

Many years ago I would do weight training after work, so I would drink a protein shake about an hour before, thinking I would have heaps of energy, I didn’t, I felt a bit bloated and lethargic, but I kept doing it thinking I was giving my muscles the best chance to grow.

Why diets don’t work…

DietFirstly let’s explore the word ‘diet’. According to Wikipedia, “The word diet often implies the use of specific intake of nutrition for health or weight-management reasons (with the two often being related).”

So how can I say diets don’t work. Well, in my opinion a diet has a start and an end. Whether it be six weeks, 12 weeks or 6 months, Most diets have a time frame attached to them. But what happens at the end of the diet?
Generally when we stop dieting we eventually gain all the weight we’ve lost, I’m speaking from experience and from what I have witnessed with people I know. The reason for this is twofold;

I have always loved sugar, just ask anyone who knows me and they’ll tell you, I always left room for dessert! So giving up sugar was quite a thing for me. What made me do it? I saw the way it affected my children, and if it affected them it affected me, it just wasn’t as noticeable.

Before being introduced to the primal lifestyle I believed sugar to be responsible for cholesterol.
